About Ward 1

Over 92,000 people live in Ward 1, 83% of residents are people of color, and 70% of which are Latinx. Ward 1 encompasses rich Latinx/Chicanx/Mexican, Native, and Black neighborhoods along with a diverse community of family-owned legacy businesses. Ward 1 encompasses the original village of the Tohono O'odham tribe and tribal land of the Pascua Yaqui. The physical barriers of Interstates 10 and 19 have long alienated residents of Ward 1 from accessing better connections through city planning and investment. Council Member Lane Santa Cruz builds on the history of activism and community organizing in Ward 1, to foster better connections through policy and investments, and build community power on behalf of all residents.
